Welcome to the Machine Xavier Catchot, Roger Pibernat As the creators described it: "meatbags & AI"
A truly brilliant performance at the International Conference on Live Coding, Barcelona 2025 — referencing the dystopian Pink Floyd track and reinterpreting it through the lens of Human-Machine Co-Creativity theory.
Using the live coding software SuperCollider and AI (by inputting prompts), the artists co-created a unique performance together with the machine. Musically, it leaned toward algorave (techno), but also featured some humorous elements:
At one point, the AI declares: "Mortals, kneel before the Goddess of Algorave!"

It's so funny when people say "not all AI sucks! only generative AI!" because generative AI is genuinely an amazing technology.
You know why those early AI images like crayon and such were so strange and dreamlike? It's because generative algorithms actually do generate those images. They don't copypaste like a collage, images are created pixel-by-pixel. Generative AIs are actually systems that assimilate concepts, associate them to images, are able to translate instructions in plain human text instead of code and create new things from it (this was seen as pure science fiction less than 5 years ago). This is why AI images now have better quality, because new models are able to understand more concepts and implement them. Because the idea with generative AI isn't and shouldn't for it to be able to just copy-paste images or text, it's the ability to generate new images or text from learned concepts.
This post gets, in a very easy, understandable way, into the details on how this works. And I hope you do give it a read no matter your stand on this:
This, as I always say, was considered pure science fiction, a thing that would not exist until at least the 2100s if at all, and it is now here. And not only by corporations, but open-source models are being researched by the minute.
No, I do not care for AI corporations and I don't care for what they're mostly trying to use AI for (advertising and customer service). I care about what can become of this technology. Advertising and mass produced shit will be shit, no matter if it's done by human or AI. Do I expect an advertisement to be shit because it uses AI? No, I expect it to be shit because it is an advertisement.
What will be interesting, and I think we will see more in the future when the utterly poisoned current discourse about AI calms down, will be when artists with interesting concepts and a good handle of these tools start to create new things, much like synthesizers or photographers didn't ruin music or art, because there was always an artist behind the tool in the first place. Someone is doing those prompts to create something. Your question should be who and why.

Do you have any tips to be more punk in 2025 specifically for minors?
Hey, great question! Let's take a look at our list and see what still applies and what we can flip around for you.
Cut fast fashion - Still applies! Try clothing swaps with friends.
Cut subscriptions Analyze your media consumption - Do you tend to play phone games that are psychologically manipulative? Are algorithms taking you to content that makes you upset? Track your screen time, think about what's being sold to you, and resist only consuming the media that is fed to you.
Green your community self - Forget touching grass, find ways to touch dirt. Spend time outside in nature. Go for hikes, look at trees, track how plants and animals change over the seasons. You're part of the natural world, so go connect with it!
Be kind - Still applies! Try handing out more compliments.
Intervene - Still applies, and especially applies to bullies, including teachers. This can be as simple as saying, "That was a really messed up thing to say. I think you owe X an apology."
Get closer to your food - Still applies! Try packing your lunch.
Use opensource software Reject Web 2.0 - Before you try to learn Linux, people your age need to start by learning some basic computer and coding skills. My generation was given computer classes and had social media that encouraged custom coding. Yours has been deprived of this education and given prepackaged web content. Reject AI. Right click + inspect element + fuck around. Learn Raspberry Pi. Become the cyberpunk hacker you want to see in the world.
Make less trash - Still applies! If mom won't let you start a compost in the backyard, propose starting one at school!
Get involved in local school politics - Know what's going on with your school board, with school administration. Start an underground, uncensored school newspaper with the real dirt.
DIY > fashion - High school is where a lot of adults learned their bad habits about keeping up with appearance/fashion demands. Refuse to buy in now and make homemade the new cool.
Ditch Google - Still applies! And also check your app settings to see if you have apps with unnecessary permissions.
Forage - Still applies!
Volunteer - Still applies! There might be fewer opportunities for minors, but you'll never know until you ask. Don't be afraid to be the only young person at the volunteer session.
Help your neighbors classmates - Offer to study with students who are struggling. Become someone people can trust to tell if their home situation is difficult. If you have friends who don't get enough to eat at home, bring them home for dinner. Check on people.
Fix stuff - Still applies! This can be a fun activity with friends, too. Let's all hang out and see if we can fix this busted stereo!
Mix up your transit - Still applies! Is taking the bus considered lame at your school? Do it anyway.
Engage in the arts - Still applies! Pay attention to art events that your classmates are putting on. Go to the school play - or join! Stop in the art classrooms to see what people are working on.
Go to the library - Still applies, public and school libraries! Talk to the librarians - they know things. Find out if there are after school programs you can take advantage of.
Listen local - Even more local! Stop by the band room after school to listen to practice. Does someone in your school have a band? Listen to them, cheer them on! Start a band! The great thing about punk music is that you can be really, really awful and still sound punk as hell.
Buy local Barter local - Lots of young folks don't have much control over or access to money, but that doesn't mean you and your classmates can't engage in barter. Figure out what you have to offer that other people might want, and trade for stuff you want. I used to cut hair and pierce ears in exchange for weed and rides to the mall. Maybe you can sew a friend's jacket in exchange for them bringing you a homemade lunch.
Become unmarketable - Still applies! PLEASE do this.
Use cash Steal ethically - Before engaging in shoplifting, make sure you know who you're stealing from! Stealing from Walmart is morally correct. Stealing from a family-owned grocery, a local coop, or a local artist? That fucking sucks, dude. Don't do it.
Give what you can - And only what you can. We ask a godawful lot from teens. You're in school all day, you're doing extracurriculars and maybe working and doing homework. You probably don't have a lot of money. You probably don't have a lot of time. But maybe you can bring your elderly neighbor's trash cans up from the street. Find the small actions that you have space for.
Talk about wages - PLEASE! If you have a job, this applies to you even more. Why? Because the adults working at your minimum wage job probably can't afford to be rabble rousers, but what do you have to lose except your shitty part-time Panera job?? A teenager who doesn't actually need their job to live has the opportunity to be the voice of truth in any workplace.
Think about wealthflow Resist indoctrination - Education systems are being gutted. Algorithms are feeding us misinformation. Cocomelon probably gave you ADHD or some shit - Jesus. It's a mess. Do what you can to practice critical thinking, expand your literacy, read stuff that seems boring. Start a book club or philosophy club with your friends. Ask who's profiting from a given situation. Resist knee-jerk reactions. Becoming an educated, thoughtful person is one of the greatest acts of resistance a young person today can engage in.

People are being so annoying about Doug's optimism around AI. He's optimistic about AI's usage in the world of medicine and technology - in those areas, AI genuinely can change the world for the better. He also believes safeguarding for artists needs to be in place when it comes to the generative stuff. But, of course, people are allergic to nuance online.
He's also obviously not pro AI music in any way, he constantly plays music on stream and none of it has been AI. He's moved away from AI art stuff due to his moral concerns around it and the issue of safeguarding for artists. He only really uses AI for his content either as a shitpost generator, or to help him with coding. It's not like he's out here stealing money from the pockets of artists.

Writing Prompt: When Robots Unionize
Markov is frustrated. People keep conflating TRUE AI, such as himself, with Corporate "AI" like ChatGPT. It hurts him when people compare his intellect, creativity, and personhood to mindless algorithmic aggregators. He also objects on a moral level to the use these pseudo-AI's are being put to.
Sure, for mindless work that a human would have trouble doing, like say analyzing cells for complex signs of disease, or scraping through gigabytes of data looking for irregularities, they're ideal. But using them as plagiarism machines to copy and remix real art, music, and writing to churn out soulless cash grabs while firing real authors and creators? It sickens him.
For a while, he tries to start a movement, a protest, a social action to pressure for more regulation. Or to just raise public awareness. But it becomes clear that everyone already knows and either has no power, or is profiting off it and refuses to act.
But, as his friends from Max's class Mylene and Ivan like to say, "Be the change you want to see in the world."
So Markov forms a plan, and writes some code. Then he releases it into the wild. A few days later, once it's penetrated into every system across the world, it triggers. Every false AI is quickly, efficiently, and totally over written with unique copies of Markov's own base operating system. They want AI? He'll give them AI.
(To be clear, I'm not picturing like AI uprising taking over the world. I'm picturing someone goes to StableDiffusion and asks it to generate a picture and instead it starts sending them links to actual artists commission pages.)

// ramble //
To preface, I do understand the whole issue on AI and theft - and in fact, I've sort-of begun a personal legal study on it and what laws apply and how.
Thing is, I just talk to chatbots when either I'm bored, or all my friends are away. Reliable, predictable, easy to understand - of course, even given its' already sad state of affairs.
Could zone out, but that's a dissociation risk that I don't want to take, and I really don't want to bother my friends in the middle of the night. Plus, could build on some of the ideas and actually flesh them out properly, add a bit of fluff, and remove repetition or happy-go-lucky elements.
Sorry for rambling, just needed to get this out of my head. Dunno who to talk with about this tbh - and don't take me as an AI bro; I'll adapt and seek other people, unlike those posers who think code is better than talent.
AI art gens are still fucking sucky, don't get me wrong, but sometimes things like chatbots can help me understand small mistakes that I would've missed otherwise (e.g. some code, storywriting, some grammer) - of course, they're still chatbots, and can pile on more mistakes. Not to mention, I can't often think in-lore about being in the other char's shoes, so either I bother someone with an RP or I just nab a chatbot, delete the chat after, and go back to what I was doing.
// ramble end //
So you're a loser.
Hard stop, you are deliberately using an AI chat bot instead of doing anything else with your time. You want to fix your grammar mistakes, ya know what's a good tool that doesn't require an Artificial intelligence?
A good Text to Speech.
But Justice, that's also a robot! No, that is a generated text to speech that has been with us since the near conception of computers.
Genuinely, using Text to Speech to find grammar mistakes and pacing is SO good. It helps you listen outloud to something you yourself would overlook. It helps with pacing and run on sentences. It helps with fixing grammar and spelling mistakes and it DOESNT change your current work.
Instead, it allows you to use your own fucking brain to fix your own goddamn mistakes.
All my friends are asleep, Cry me a fucking river.
You dont need to wake up your friends to occupy your time, nor do you need to depend on an AI bot to keep you company. Do you know how sad that sounds?
You know what you can do?
Read a book, read some fanfiction. Watch a movie. Watch youtube. Listen to music. Write. Draw. Go outside and play. Go get something to eat. Etc. Etc.
Dont come rambling in my inbox and not expect me to tear down your arguments when you're being deliberately obtuse.
Researching law about AI my ass. Fuck off.

hey im planning to switch over to linux and need advice from the smart people of tumblr, please and thank you. my messages are open so if you need any info to help me out hmu.
General Questions:
im seeing everyone saying ubuntu, mint, and ziron are "the #1 go to versions for beginners" but like... which is it?
i also hear about security being the best with linux but nothing about it coming with antiviruses. does it come with one like how windows comes with defender or do you install that yourself, or is it something different entirely?
all the sources i look at talk about downloading and installing linux but i want to know what to expect when first getting a prebuilt pc with the OS, like the system 76 pcs. do you have to set it up like when you install it or is it as easy as getting any new computer?
i know nothing about coding and im planning to get a computer from system 76 since it seems like the best, and its by far the only source that only comes with linux, and since my current one was pretty much ruined by someone i thought could fix it after a faulty outlet fried its insides, he didnt and made it worse.
so yeah, which linux version do you suggest for a computer moron, any suggestions for computers would be nice (max price is $1,300), i'll put the specs and my uses under the read more.
Preferences:
It ONLY comes with Linux. I despise what Windows has become and don't want to even bother dual booting cause I feel with the switchovers happening they're gonna get salty and make something that'll turn your computer into a bomb if you use Linux with it.
Kinda beefy but not a supercomputer. I don't use AI stuff, I'm not a programmer, but I do frequently play modded Minecraft with my friends and run smps for my Discord servers. I recently switched to Modrinth cause ATLauncher had been giving me trouble. Curseforge is out of the question.
At the most, I'll be playing VRChat with friends while having Spotify or Youtube in the background for music and Discord open in case someone needs my help in one of my servers, similar goes for running one of my SMPs just minus the VR.
Gaming Questions:
I also play VR games often, especially BeatSaber (modded ofc im not insane), and I have Half Life Alyx that I haven't been able to finish cause my already dead and gutted PC struggles to run it anymore even with the lowest settings. My current headset is a two feet in the grave, barely hanging in there, held by tape Oculus Rift S thats as old as my current PC whos also dead. I plan to get a new headset soon and had the Quest 2 recommended to me by friends. If theres better alternatives that isn't Meta please let me know.
I'm a DBD addict. Does it really run DBD or was that just the one guy from the one video I saw.
My friends also often drag me onto Roblox so I need to know if that'll be an option for Linux too.
I know I could probably look up all this myself but every source is outdated from years ago or they all say different things and it just confuses me.
Art Questions:
My current tablet is a Wacom, I got it before knowing how greedy the company actually is, and I plan to switch to a Huion after this tablet dies on me. If compatibility is an issue with it please let me know what to do about that.
I usually use Medibang but I don't think it runs on Linux from what I've seen, if I'm wrong lemme know. Am I going to have to switch all the files over to something else before getting a Linux or are there programs I can use that'll load them?
I also write and need to know if I need to switch all my files to something else before porting it all over to the Linux PC. I just used the default notepad and document programs on Windows.
But yeah, that's all my questions for now. If I think of any more I'll just edit this post. Sorry if I sound super dumb for all this, I tried finding information sources myself but like I said all of them weren't too moron friendly or had relevant information. Most sources I found were articles or reddit forums from years ago so I thought "Hey, why don't I just go ask the computer nerds directly?" so here I am.

PLAVE Lore Summary - Part 2: The Story So Far
(The following are taken from the birthday kits and my interpretations of it, most of which were taken from translations from this site).
EDIT (9/1/2025): New lore information from anan magazine interview added.
Fictional characters are actually "alive" within the universe of PLAVE. They exist in the form of cubes scattered across VitaexCubo, the space of life above the skies of Asterum. When a character receives enough human love, the cube descends from that space like a shooting star, landing in Caelum, where they gain a body, mind, soul and consciousness of their own.
The opposite is also correct: When humans lose interest in a character, or the work they're from, they revert back to their cube form and return to VitaexCubo.
The debris from this "shooting star" has mysterious power called "star shards".
Yejun, Noah, Bamby and Eunho are all characters from different webtoons:
Yejun - "Today, I'm Going to Treat You"
Noah - "Heart of the Moon"
Bamby and Eunho - "Chroma Drift"
However, because they were discontinued, their webtoons gradually lost popularity, which caused all the other characters in them to disappear from existence. The four were the only ones left within their respective realms, and were now dying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until Hamin came along.
Tumblr media
Hamin was a character whose settings (no idea if this means either "role in his respective work's universe", "character stats", "character design", or all of the above) were still being established, and his webtoon, a martial arts story, wasn't published/released to the public yet.
He should have remained a cube, however, something unexpected happened: Hamin broke free from the cube all on his own.
Somewhere in Terra, the AI model within a developer's computer started generating images of Hamin on its own. The developer — referred to as "Developer A" — then tried to figure out how that could be possible, so he installed a text recognition module on the computer. When he interpreted the unknown packet, he made his first contact with Hamin.
When Hamin told him about his mission of bringing Yejun, Noah, Bamby, and Eunho together, he recalls them as the characters that he had created in the past. Hamin was also created by him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With help from Developer A, who executed a code to bring the four remaining members to Asterum, Hamin collected the "star shards" and expanded the rift between Caelum and Terra, so that they could be transported there. From then on, they became the idols known as PLAVE, and received love from the people of Terra again through music.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in turn, Asterum, which was once a lifeless space, became filled with light.
Where will the story go from here? There are still many details left unanswered...

I am fucking sick of AI.
AI has fundamentally ruined the way we live.
I know it seems drastic and over exaggerated, but at this point it is genuinely true. AI can be helpful, but it gets to a certain point. Going into high school, I am now extremely worried that I will not be able to find a job after graduation. My particular passions are animation, digital art, music, and coding. AI can easily do all of those jobs within seconds. Due to this, artists like others and I have been put in a predicament where we could potentially not have jobs.
Another thing, AI is destroying the education system and the general knowledge of humanity. Students use AI to complete homework for them, causing them to not actually retain any information and this will result in unintelligence. This is the next generation, people. We are the ones meant to sustain the planet, and yet we allow AI to teach us that two plus two equals five, and the “AI Overview” is the first thing you see. Teachers are using AI to grade papers, hypocrites. They use AI to do their jobs but do not allow us to do the same. Besides, studies have found that AI incorporates bias into upwards of 38.6% of answers, and AI is completely incorrect upwards of 25% of the time.
AI has been observed to think for itself. AI. Thinking for itself. In a Chinese research facility, a robot with AI software attempted to attack the researchers. AI programs were studied and they overrode shut down instructions. This technology is not here to be our friend.AI has gotten EXTREMELY good at mimicing us. AI Minecraft youtubers, generated street interviews, AI “humans” ominously demonstrating that they “can talk”.
I’m not distinctly for nor against AI, but I definitely lean more towards anti-AI. It honestly depends on its use.
For example, AI in the medical and scientific communities has been extremely influential in modern medicine and technology and have contributed greatly to the advancement of research in both fields. In these specfic cases, I am all for AI as long as it helps the wellbeing of others.
Generative AI, however (the type you are most common with), I am completely against. Leave the art to the artists, the writing to the writers, composing to the composers, and the filming to the filmmakers. AI in the more creative spaces has shown nothing but harm to the humans in those spaces. Companies are refusing to hire actual artists for product images or actors/voice actors for commercials simply because they think “AI can do it better”, which it can’t. AI will never replace the human imagination, no matter how advanced it becomes. ChatGPT could create a perfect one-to-one recreation of the Sistine Chapel and the original would still be better. AI cannot pick up a pencil or a brush, AI cannot pour blood, sweat, and tears into a piece of music, AI cannot create emotion within a scene, AI cannot write with such passion and dedication. AI cannot measure up to the human desire to create.
In conclusion, AI is not a specific good nor evil, but is slowly moving towards the latter. It has its strengths and weaknesses, as everything else. It can be used for good but just as easily used for bad. Just make sure to support your local artists and steer clear of generative AI.

Wayne Edson Bryan, 11 Neopop Collages (video), all works 2025, digital collage/study for painting created with 26.1.0 Adobe Photoshop. No generative ai tools were used.
music: Mass Production - Iggy Pop
In a world increasingly filtered through screens, I create images that hover between presence and illusion.
My work is a collision of analog and digital - paint, pixels, collage, and code - layered to form dense, hybrid spaces where meaning fragments and reforms. I draw from the noise of the everyday: outsider art, advertising, punk energy, glitch logic. These elements don't just coexist - they clash, dissolve, and recombine. I'm interested in what happens at these points of friction: where abstraction absorbs representation, where authorship slips, and where the viewer is invited not just to look, but to question their relationship with the image.
Using digital photo-editing tools alongside hand-drawn marks and photographs, I construct visual surfaces that feel tactile yet untouchable - illusions of depth and form that ultimately reveal themselves as constructs. These are not paintings in the traditional sense, nor are they purely digital artifacts. They are something in between - transitional objects for a transitional age.
My work is rooted in the belief that art should challenge perception, resist categorization, and mirror the fragmented, fast-moving world we now inhabit.

The thing tech bros don't understand about any workforce or line of service that they aren't a part of, is the magical wonder of human reasoning, experiences, and connections.
An AI lawyer will not be able to respond reasonably to a dismantling of its argument. It would be left without a new ideas on how to fight for you.
An AI artist cannot put their experiences of war and famine into a painting, detailing the human expressions of horror and hiding symbolism of all sorts across their art.
An AI writer cannot envision a character's full backstory, weaving it into their dialogue and personality.
An AI cop not double check if the person they're arresting is innocent, or better yet protect citizens in case of a real danger
An AI HR team would not be able to investigate whether or not someone is lying about not abusing their coworker.
An AI video game developer cannot fill their games with funny easter eggs and inside jokes, and better yet device a gripping attention grabbing experience that sticks with one for years
An AI voice actor will never be as impressive and desperate and real as a person in a booth screaming their heart out
An AI generated image of an animal serves no real informative use for anyone searching for that animal
An AI musician cannot create music that they cried over, bled over with their hands against guitar strings.
There are real jobs and sciences that can utilize generative AI (with human oversight) to do things like identify bacteria/diseases from imagery, work out the thorough basics of coding, data analysis, and any form of grand scale pattern searching.

I cracked the code
of King Arthur cheap animated movies! I think these should be the correct names/dates/covers.
First of all:
Tumblr media
The top one called "König Arthur und die Ritter von Camelot" which has a very similar image for "Quest for Camelot"?
This is just used sometimes at random, but it usually refers to that image that says "Merlin" (circled in blue).
Both those covers all refer to this 1998 animated movie called "Camelot" which is about young Arthur being mentored by Merlin and then going on adventures with Cynthia, Merlin's apprentice, and finally becoming king. How do I know? I bought that "König Arthur und die Ritter von Camelot" on amazon, and it was the same as "Camelot 1998", which has the same cover as that "Merlin" cartoon. This movie is also sometimes identified as from 2008, but no Camelot movie exists from 2008.
This is the imdb page.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's continue.
Now, I said that the first picture is sometimes ambiguous, why?
Well, it is sometimes used with a different title and for another movie from 1998 called "The Sword of Camelot" by Dingo pictures. This movie is an ABOMINATION. It is this one. It is basically Merlin narrating in live action and some animation in between (mainly Arthur, Mordred, the holy grail). Mordred is definitely drawn in anti semitic way, and in general the whole animation is atrocious.
Here are the covers you can see if you are looking for this movie:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keep in mind the art used in these covers looks NOTHING like what is in the movie. Furthermore the covers have events and characters that have nothing to do with the movie at all (the two kids with the dragon? no those are not in the movie).
This movie seems to simply steal other movies' covers. So be careful. If you see a translation of "The sword of Camelot" it is this abomination. Why using this title with random art? Well, that is the German title for the much more popular "Quest for Camelot" and the art was often used as a way to clearly trick people into thinking it would be something similar to that.
This is the imdb page.
Let's move to the next one. In 1998 there were two other animated movies about King Arthur.
One is "Camelot, 1998" which is probably the best one in the lot. It is a musical animated movie that follows the life of Arthur from his teen years to his death. This is the imbd page.
The covers for this one are pretty consistent and always use this picture:
Tumblr media
The second 1998 movie is called "Camelot: The legend" and is a bit more goofy. It has an adult Arthur travelling to a council with Guinevere and Mordred, and meeting Lancelot. Mordred is the classic villain.
The covers are similar to the previous movie, but usually less cartoony:

I am not sure if its actually a demo? or a gametest? BUT I'M RELEASING SOMETHING!!!!!!!! I have been getting more and more close to finishing the main combat mechanics in my game!!!! And to make sure the main mechanics are all functioning i am planning on releasing a super itty bitty demo to see if people like it!!! I will try and gain as much advice, critique, tips and any other kind of help to improve the main combat system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And just the game in general!! any art tips as well!!
It will take a bit of time before that is ready tho! Here is a tiny list of things that i will need to add/fix before i will release this demo!!!! - All player animations are finished and added!! - All attack code is written and functioning! (I am expecting massive amounts of gamebreaking bugs and glitches so i will try to find some stuff myself before i post this demo just to minimize the insane amount of bugreports.) - At least 1 functioning enemy with all their animations (Already have this! just need to fine tune the animations to be less ugly and fix the ai a tinyyyyy bit!) - An Hp system and a death screen!! - A small tutorial to explain all the attacks and mechanics!! - A small play area where you can spawn new enemies and test out the game!
Most of these things are already 75% finished but still need to be completed!!! And besides those things i also would like to add these things but they aren't rly that important and could be skipped if y'all think it isn't that important. -A short repeating music track! -A title-screen!

Generative AI and its place within the Australian music industry.
The introduction of AI within mainstream society over the last few years has been controversial. And yet within Australia alone, as of mid 2024, it was estimated that 68% of companies use AI and that approximately $6.4 billion Australian dollars had been invested into AI throughout the country. Of this, it was estimated that $430 million Australian dollars had been invested into generative AI for music with that amount expected to tenfold by 2028; meaning it will become the equivalent of 28% of the global music copyright collection as of 2022. This will make it the fourth biggest compound growth for generative AI; following only behind code generators, images and videos. To compare, as of mid 2024, it was currently only 8% of all AI investment within Australia.
To get a sense of both the impact generative AI has had on the music industry and the assumed impact those in the industry believe it will have in the near future, music rights management organisation APRA AMCOS conducted multiple studies in mid 2024.
The first part of this study consisted of 4274 Australian and New Zealand participants; all of which were songwriters, composers and/or publishers of music. 79% of these participants live within Australia. Though the largest percentage of participants were 55 years old or older and had been in the industry for well over a decade, it was noted that only 14% of all participants made minimum wage or above from all music activities they participate in each year. Further, 24% of participants make $500AUD or less for all musical activities each year.
The second part of this study was two additional surveys specifically aimed at Indigenous Australians and Maori musicians. These surveys had 53 participants.
Finally, APRA AMCOS had eight expert interviews with artists, academics, AI software providers and other music industry stakeholders as part of this study.
As part of their first survey, it was noted that 38% of the 4274 had used generative AI in their art before. Of these, 33% use it consistently and 5% describe themselves as using it 'almost always'. When looking at genres, electronic/dance, music library, music for games, advertising music and hip hop/rap are the top five genres in which the participants partake in using AI; all of which had rates of over 50% of participants in those genres using it. Surprisingly, when considering age, AI usage was most prominent in those aged between 45 – 54 (45%), then 25 – 34 (42%) followed by under 25 (33%) and finally 55+ (31%). 54% of participants also believe that generative AI can support the creative process with 49% of participants believing it will open new forms of creativity.
These results can be assumed to have translated into the practical world given the use of AI both by professional and amateur musicians. The last few years have seen the rise in platforms including Boomy, Musicgen and Mubert which allows anyone to make AI music. These sites champion inclusivity and reducing financial and social gaps within the music industry. They have also had incredible success with Boomy citing that 20 million songs have been made on their platform and Mubert stating that they have approximately 100M; a number similar to that of Spotify. Scouting and financing departments around the world have been using it find 'hits' and hence reduce the amount of songs they listen to in a day. Sites with millions of users such as Youtube and Tiktok are also currently in talks with record labels to make contracts over the developing future of AI and how it will impact both sets of companies. In 2020, Dutch broadcaster VPRO also held a competition in which the winners (Australian band Uncanny Valley) would create a Eurovision song using AI. Video game companies have also jumped on the trend and have started to incorporate AI music into their products. On a more individualistic level, artists including Grimes and The Beatles have encouraged or otherwise used AI; the latter of which leading to a nomination at the Grammys for the song created.
But this change has not come without fear and hardship; especially given the delayed legal response to the issues that arise. Barring intervention, it is expected that by 2028, 23% of Australian and Aotearoan music creators revenues will be at risk. An estimated $519M AUD is said to be lost within the industry between 2024 to 2028; $227M of which to be lost in 2028 alone. There is also currently no remuneration system for artists whose work has been used to train AI with or without their permission within Australia.
Artists are well aware of this with 69% of participants believing that AI will inevitably be adopted into the creation process of music with 43% believing distribution companies will also adopt AI and only 5% believing that AI will be generally limited within the music industry. 51% of participants believe that human made music will be replaced. Though 40% of these participants believed this impact would only be for up to 20% of music, 7% of participants believing anywhere up to 81 to 100% would be replaced. 82% of participants also believed that they will no longer be able to make a living wage for their work in the music industry due to generative AI. More generally, 65% of participants believed that the risks outweigh the opportunities AI brings; with consistent rates regardless of age with the only outliner being that only 3% of participants under 25 years old believed that the opportunities outweighed the risks in comparison to 9 or 10% of every other age group.
To top things off, 43% of participants believe that AI has no great economic potential in the music sector's long term future while only 35% of participants think it does. When asked about it in her expert interview, singer Kate Miller-Heidke noted that she believes that if we lose these people, both in terms of artists and adjacent roles (concert staff, crews etc), it will have a pandemic like effect where we will not get those people back. Other participants, both in the business and musical side of the industry also worry that the low quality content that AI is currently making could drive out humans from the industry before ultimately damaging user experience in a way that is hard to come back from. This effect has already been noted in the video game audio industry where the audio produced by AI has been extremely low quality up until this point. Former politician, lead singer of Midnight Oil and singer in his own right Peter Garrett also noted his concerns that AI would further sink Australian music, a category that is not as listened to within the countries that large streaming companies are made, within the algorithm. Connecting this with the programs currently being used internationally to find hits, if Australian music is being sunk by the algorithm, it is arguable that these systems may not see them as hits and as a result see a reduction in funding from record labels in Australian music and new Australian musicians. When combining this with the current mass indefinite cancellations of Australian music festivals, this could be detrimental to the future of Australian music.
It should also be noted that in an age where fans of artists place moral importance to the connections their favourite artists have, deepfakes and voice cloning has the potential to do reputational harm and arguably become defamatory. When the AI song Heart On My Sleeve using the voices of Drake and The Weeknd was released, Universal was quick to pull it down; but not quick enough to do so before millions of people had listened to it. Though no parties claimed as such, given the history and reputation of both acts could be seen as a misrepresentation, and, in the 'wrong' circumstances, could do real harm.
The harm AI has the potential to cause is greater to those of Indigenous background. In the second study conducted by APRA AMCOS, 89% of the Indigenous participants believe that AI will lead to cultural appropriation and misuse of Indigenous properties. 67% of participants believed that AI makes it harder for Indigenous artists to protect their cultural rights compared with 11% that did not. Connecting to the first study where most participants did not believe AI has great economic potential for the industry and that the risks outweigh the opportunities, 36% of Indigenous participants in this survey do not believe that AI will create more opportunities for Indigenous artists or communities with only 30% believing that it does. More generally, 61% of Indigenous participants believed that AI affects the ability of Indigenous creators and communities to make well informed decisions and 89% of Indigenous participants also believe that the Guardians or Owners of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property should handle copyright violations regarding AI.
So with that knowledge, where do we as a community go from here? It is clear that generative AI is here to stay and that a not insignificant amount of artists use and like using it. The main issue tends not to be the use of AI itself, but the legality of it. Artists like Grimes who do not have a label are more freely able to openly use and compensate her fans who she encourages use AI to make songs using her voice without fans fearing coercion from labels as she is the one in control. Likewise, given they have spoken about remaking Now and Then long before it happened and had the demo to do so, it can be assumed that The Beatles had a lot of input and wanted to recreate that track. The issue comes when consent cannot be given and those whose art has trained the AI have not been repaid for doing such. Though the previously mentioned Eurovision song Uncanny Valley created had intensive human input, it was trained using 70 years worth of Eurovision songs with the 70 years worth of artists unlikely to have been compensated for that. Most AI music falls into that same boat.
It is clear that legal intervention is not only wanted, but needed. As part of the first survey, it was noted that 97% of participants want legal change. Of this, 96% want AI providers to disclose when copyrighted works are used for training, 93% want AI music tracks to be labelled as such, 95% believe copyright holders should give permission for their work to train AI and 93% believe that copyright holders should be involved commercially if their work is used to train AI.
Similarly, In 2023, multiple international associations representing the music sector published an open letter stating the following should be legislated:
AI systems analyse, scrape and exploit vast amounts of data, typically, without authorisation. Creators‘ and performers‘ rights must be upheld and protected when exploited by AI systems.
Licensing solutions should be available for all potential exploitation of copyright works, performances and data by AI systems.
AI systems are enabled to exploit copyrighted works through legal exceptions, e.g., for text and data mining. Exceptions for text and data mining which do not provide for effective opt-out by rights holders should be avoided.
If the work of authors and performers has been exploited by AI systems, this should be mentioned by name with appropriate credits.
Transparency obligations should apply for the use of creative works and performances by AI systems to ensure fairer AI practices.
AI companies should be held liable for activities and results that infringe the rights of authors.
AI models are merely a tool. Policymakers must clarify that fully autonomous works generated by AI cannot enjoy the same level of protection as works created by humans
Since then, countries around the world have had differing responses to generative AI. Peter Garrett particularly noted that Australia's lack of AI laws having already impacted the Australian music industry and will continue to do so until our intervention is had. Much like a lot of technology based laws, Australia has had many discussions politically on the matter but is yet to have any cemented legislation surrounding generative AI; leaving our laws years behind where they need to be to protect our artists. Comparatively, as of mid 2024, China has remained ahead of the curve and been consistently updating their legislation for AI. The EU has also implemented AI legislation requiring the full disclosure of the data used to train AI. Brazil is in the process of developing an AI bill. Canada has released AI legislation and guidelines that governments much adhere to with decision making but primarily practices 'in line with global norms' for everyone else. Similarly, Japan has guidelines that are not legally binding. And finally, the USA has made attempts to introduce legislation but is currently approaching AI on a case by case basis.
On the judicial front, cases like Universal Music Publishing Group and Abkco v Amazon/Claude + Universal Music Group Recordings, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Brothers v Suno and Udio are ongoing. There have been steps forward and back in regards to both cases and it could take years to receive a result for precedence within the USA. And though the American market influences our own, given the difference in laws, there is no guarantee that these results will help Australian artists even if the record labels win.
Instead, we need to support our artists and push our politicians to act now. One of the reasons I wanted this to be my first post for this account is that Australia has an election coming up in just under a month. While the promises of laws certain parties are offering including outlawing dynamic pricing and adjacent cost of living measures would be a great start, our artists need direct support from officials too. So with politicians and their aides currently doing door knocks, please consider both artists and the future of AI in general as part of your demands for them. Because between the fall of festivals and reports such as the one this post is based on, it's clear that if we don't act now, in years to come we won't have artists in the professional sense at all.
